| In Our
Unitarian Church...... We believe that all people should be free to work out their own religious beliefs. For this reason we do not offer creeds, sacred books or certainties about the nature of God. Instead we offer a fellowship in which we celebrate the adventure of life and search for meaning. We try to achieve fulfilment for ourselves and others. This fellowship is strong enough to help us go our different ways, to meet life's challenges knowing there are friends to sustain and support us should the need ever arise. Our tradition is rooted in Christianity, distinguished by a tendency to demand that stated beliefs should pass through the sieve of rationality. Our most valued ideal is our commitment to religious freedom as shown by our determination not to be bound by doctrine or dogma. We are, though, conscious of the discipline involved in establishing our personal beliefs as imposed by such freedom. All of us revere the teachings of Jesus. At the same time we are open to the wisdom of Buddha, Mahomet, Gandhi, Schweitzer and other revered religious leaders. Our services include prayer, poetry and readings from these and other sources which include the literature of world faiths, the discoveries of science and the writings of those who help illuminate our way through life. We all accept and cherish our differences. This is what it means to be a Unitarian. By undertaking works of social significance we seek to enhance our role in the life of the community. We are particularly interested in congregational participation in these works and all our other activities. |
